DOG SUCCESSES

Roxy

Roxy by Mara Erlandson

Roxy came to our home September 2004. My husband, Jay, was volunteering at the Grand County Animal Shelter and saw her pitiful face and shivering body in one of the pens.  He decided we should take her home and foster her until she was a little less afraid. She was rescued from a house where the owner kept many animals in the basement and did not feed or let them outside. Roxy was abused by this man and it took Jay 9 months to allow him to put her collar on. She lets him reluctantly load her in his vehicle for drives, and walks one step behind him when he takes the dogs for a walk. We have taken Roxy to the office so she will be exposed to more people, and are grateful to friends and coworkers for taking the time to get her socialized with people. She is still pretty shy but loves to be petted. She wasn't always so sure that other dogs were not out to harm her, but now she thinks they all want to play. It is a joy to see her playing and showing her true personality!

Bijou

Bijou by Mara Erlandson

Bijou just came into our lives about a month ago from the Grand County Animal Shelter.  She was found wandering the streets without any identification tags and nobody ever called to claim her.   When we went to the shelter to meet her, she hid down the hallway from us and peeked at us from a distance.  She still has a tendency to growl at men but after a brief introduction, is happy for their attention.  Bijou is now showing us her playful spirit and is best buddies with her roommate, Roxy.

Blue                      Blue

Blue by Suzie Royce Cruz

When Blue was seven months old, she was surrendered to the Grand County Shelter. I got a call from my friends working at the shelter while I was on vacation in Hawaii...“we have the perfect dog for you!” True to form, when we returned from our trip we picked Blue up at the shelter on New Year’s Day 2002. Blue has had abandonment issues but has adjusted very well to my schedule.

Mojo

Mojo by Suzie Royce Cruz

We added Mojo to our family in November 2005. MoJo is a four year old border collie but was so skinny and malnourished when we rescued him that I was not sure if he was purebred or not. His hair was growing in orange-brown where his joint hairs were rubbed off. He is now growing into a wonderful, healthy dog. He does not have a mean bone in his body! He now lives with Blue and enjoys life’s little surprises like a puppy.  These dogs are true companions.

Lily     Lily

Lily by Corin Wood

Lily was two years old when she was brought to the GC Animal Shelter the first part of April.  Her owners didn’t want to feed her any longer now that she was pregnant. She gave birth to six beautiful puppies a day or two later.  She was emaciated due to the fact that her owners weren’t feeding her. Her coat was dry. In addition, she cowered and was very submissive indicating that her owners most likely abused her physically. Lily was adopted on May 26th and has blossomed since that time. She is now a healthy, active, happy dog and is part of a family that loves her.

CAT SUCCESSES

Hidey

Hidey and Mary

Hidey by Mary McNutt

Hidey was surrendered to the Shelter when his former owner passed away. He was so terrified that he crawled into a crevice behind the cat cages and never came out (hence, his name, Hidey). It was a full week before one of the Shelter volunteers even knew he was there! I feared he would never be adopted since he was 12 years old and too afraid to be seen, and I just had to take him home. Once Hidey knew he was in a loving home, he blossomed! A vet check revealed he had only three teeth, so he is pampered with lots of good, soft food. He loves to be petted, and he snuggles up close on my bed every night to keep me warm. He and his new kitty-friend, Misty, race and play tag every morning. With lots of soft foods available, he has filled out and is once more a beautiful, contented cat.
